Sending your Letter

After deciding which policy you would like to advocate for, follow the steps below using this letter as your template. The bolded words are what should be changed for each letter or policy you choose.

Dear Representative (or Senator) Name,

 

My name is (Your Name) and I am writing to request your support on (policy). As a constituent of yours who has witnessed the devastation that (type of cancer) cancer can cause, your championship on this critical issue will help alleviate suffering among the American people. (Insert fact about specific cancer here – I recommend looking on American Cancer Society for any statistics that you feel are valuable to your message).

 

(Share your story and how cancer has affected you)

Step 1

Emailing your Representative

1. Go to https://www.census.gov/mycd/  

2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your zip code, then click go.

3. Your representative will come up. If the site says to enter your address, please do to ensure you are emailing the correct Representative.

4. Click on the mail icon under his/her name. Follow the steps on website to send an email.

Step 2

Emailing your Senators

1. Go to https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm

2. Choose your state.

3. Click contact for each Senator.

4. Follow directions on his/her website to send your email. 

Step 3

Following up

You may receive a response from your Senators and/or Representative. You typically do not have to respond, as most times they simply thank you for sharing your thoughts. However, if they ask for more information, please share it with them.
